Five Ways to Love Your Heart

0

February isn’t just about the Valentine’s Day hearts, but it is also important to highlight that it is American Heart Month. What does it mean to be heart healthy and how can we encourage the ones that we love to adopt this lifestyle? Here are 5 ways to love your heart!

Know your health stats.

That wellness appointment you’ve been avoiding? Go ahead and schedule it now. Talk to your physician or medical provider about where you stand with your heart healthy numbers  and see what can be done to improve. You might be surprised and have a set of great numbers. But, it’s always good to see if there are areas of improvement.

Find an accountability partner.

Once you know where you stand, find an accountability partner. It can be your significant other or a trusted friend. A journey through health doesn’t have to be lonely and it’s more fun with a buddy. If your community has a monthly challenge taking place, that is always a fun way to incorporate accountability.

Play outside as a family.

Aiming to spend 150 minutes a week can be easier if you can do it as a family. Dance. Hike. Run. Jumprope. Play a competitive game of basketball. Any activity that involves getting your heart rate up while spending time with your loved ones is a great way to end a busy and hectic day.

Try meditation or yoga to help reduce stress.

Setting aside 5-10 minutes a day to help reduce stress will pay off in the long run. The simple act of slowing down and really let go of the stressors of the day will not only help you mentally, but you might notice an improvement in your heart rate over time.

Eat more heart healthy meals.

When people see healthy meals, you might automatically think limiting any indulgences like cake or wine. That’s not the case at all! Heart healthy meals might include limiting processed foods, while increasing more vegetables or protein-rich foods, depending on your dietary restrictions. Always consult with your medical provider before making any drastic changes to your diet, but here are a few ideas on what you can start including in your meals.

Here are some additional ideas to take part in Heart Month from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
