February Family-Friendly Events in Louisville {2022}

With February right around the corner, there’s a number of different activities in the Louisville area for families! From dinosaurs, to Valentine’s making events, to nature hikes – there’s something for everyone; here’s our February guide to family-friendly events in Louisville.


February 1st – 28th

The Sky’s the Limit

Bowman Field

In honor of Black History Month, the Louisville Regional Airport Authority has announced that Bowman Field will be hosting an exhibit from February 1-28 called “The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation,” which showcases specific members of the Black aviation community and their achievements. Through the use of visuals, visitors will get a look into how these men and women got their start in aviation, any adversity they experienced, and how they ultimately achieved greatness and rose to prominence.


February 4th – 6th

Jurassic Quest

“Jurassic Quest is the only interactive dinosaur event that has more true-to-life size dinosaurs than any other touring dinosaur event in each of its indoor touring locations from the very small to the gigantic. In collaboration with leading paleontologists, each dinosaur has been painstakingly replicated in every detail. Jurassic Quest exhibits also allow future paleontologists to dig up fossils, ride their favorite life-sized dinosaur, enjoy walking dinosaur and baby dinosaur shows, and much more.”


February 5th

Making Tactile Valentines

10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the American Printing House Factory and Museum

“Learn about the tools and techniques to make Valentine Pop Up cards that appeal to the sense of touch. Participants will leave with two completed projects and enough knowledge to make many more. Our guest instructor is local artist Patrice Ising. Best kids ages 6 and up and adults. Eco Kids Discovery Day

“ECO Kids Discovery Days are offered every first and third Saturday of the month (weather permitting). E-C-O stands for Every Child Outside, which is the best way for children of all ages to connect with the natural world. Masks and social distancing are required when interacting with Naturalists. ECO Kids Discovery days may include: HANDS-ON DISCOVERY STATIONS, led by Volunteer Naturalists, from 1 – 4 p.m. POP-UP STORY CIRCLES, because everything and everyone has a story. Watch for our storytelling and story-sharing circles near Spirit Nest. HIKE OF THE DAY, led by a Bernheim guide, starts at 2 p.m. and runs 45 – 60 minutes. $10 per car recommended donation applies to non-members.”

Poetry of Nature

“Let’s listen to nature poetry and explore the forests’ sounds together! Claire will have Mary Oliver, Ada Limon, Emily Dickenson, Ross Gay and other artists on speaker. The adventure is to walk, stop and listen. At the end, there will be a chance to sit in the bird blind to write & share your own poetry! Members are FREE! 11th Annual La Grange Chocolate Crawl

MakerPlace Workshop: Stained Glass

Family Fun Day

13th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count

“This FREE event is for beginning to advanced bird watchers of all ages. We’ll meet at the picnic pavilions near the Nature Center to enjoy a walk led by birding experts. The Louisville Audubon Society will help identify and count birds and report our sightings to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. February 20th

Black History Film Series: Green Book

The Library and the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center Office of Diversity and Inclusion present a screening of Green Book. Set in 1962, this Academy Award-winning film (Best Picture) is inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South by African American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and Italian American Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from the Bronx. February 26th

Dragons Love Preschool Parties

We know dragons love tacos, but you know what else dragons love? They love a good party! So grab someone you love and join us at the Main Library for a Preschool Party! Enjoy a special appearance by the dragon from Dragons Love Tacos and live music from children’s entertainer Jim Gill.

Each child that attends will receive a free book. This event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Community Early Childhood Council.

Winter Hike in the Woods

Jefferson Memorial Forest

Winter hiking means no bugs, no humidity, and better views! Hiking in cooler temperatures even burns more calories! What’s not to love?! The Scott’s Gap full loop is a moderate to strenuous 3.3 mile trail that traverses the hills and valleys of the westernmost portion of Jefferson Memorial Forest. Join Forest staff for a fun morning of exercise and a bit of learning about the winter woods. There is an elevation gain of 640 ft. on this hike. Dress in layers and bring a water bottle and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended. Please note that there are no restroom facilities at this location.

Pre-registration required. Register by calling (502) 368-5404. Program meets in the parking lot of Scott’s Gap. FEE: $10/person. Intermediate Level (not a beginner hike)
For ages 9 and older. A parent/legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18.

 


Wednesdays

Wednesday Wonders in The Parklands

10:30 am to 11:30 am – Ben Stout House (Turkey Run Park); 5 to 9 years old
2:30 pm to 3:30 pm – PNC Achievement Center (Beckley Creek Park); 2 to 5 years old

“Wednesday Wonders are interactive programs designed to spark the curiosity of young children. This session from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Ben Stout House in Turkey Run Park, is for elementary aged (recommended ages 5-9) learners. Offering a different natural history wonder each week, we will cultivate critical thinking, scientific literacy, and stewardship of our natural surroundings. This hour-long program emphasizes learning through exploration and discovery outdoors combined with science experiments, activities, play, and art. Come prepared for the weather as we go outside for hikes, creek walks, and activities during all seasons. Wednesday Wonders is an all outdoor program. Masks are not required outdoors. In the event of severe weather, the program will be moved indoors at the respective location, and masks will be required for everyone age 2 and over.”
