Mom Guilt; The Lies We Tell Ourselves

0

Oh, the dreaded mom guilt. It creeps in and takes a hold of us when we least expect it. It can control us; feeding us the lies that continue to play in our heads. We are not doing enough. We need to try harder. Why are you not like all the other moms? You are not particularly good at this mom thing, are you?

STOP!!!! These are lies we play in our heads over and over like reruns of our favorite sitcoms that is just not true. So, where did these lies come from? How did they even get started?

The origin can be rooted back to many different sources, such as that beautiful Instagram post of your favorite follower baking cookies with their two perfect kids. Kids with their mom, smiling so big and bright in matching aprons. Maybe it is from your mom who always kept the house so clean and perfect, while you can barely keep toilet paper on the toilet paper roll. Or maybe it is from a well-meaning doctor or friend that is giving their advice on what you should or should not be doing in regards to your childrens’ health or the amount of screen time they have each day.

So, what can be done if you find yourself in the dreaded trap of mom guilt!?!

1. It is okay to take time for yourself.

Remember that self-care is not selfish and you as a mama can not pour from an empty cup!

2. Identify where the mom guilt is coming from: childhood experiences, involvement, etc.

Once you identify where the guilt is coming from, you can begin to know the triggers and start to make small changes to stop the guilt from continuing to happen.

3. If you feel like you are unable to parent or make decisions, then it might be time to talk to a professional.

You do not have to suffer alone and there is help.

Parenting can be hard, messy, and challenging. It can also be fun, rewarding, and one of the best experiences of your life. So, remember, give yourself grace and know that you do not have to be Super Mom every day. Some days, your OK is beyond good enough.
