If you are like me, I try to find somewhere to donate items rather than throw them away. Over the years, I have found many non-profits to donate items. Here is a mom’s guide to recycling in Louisville. I hope this list helps you declutter a few things from your home while helping others.
Batteries Plus
They offer to recycle batteries, light bulbs, and small electronics.
Books
I donate books we no longer read to the boys’ school, HeadStart programs, Little Free Libraries, or The Rosewater Bookstore who is a nonprofit supporting the Beechmont community.
Dress for Success
You can donate your gently used business attire to help women dress for potential job interviews. All clothes must be on hangers. You may donate shoes and jewelry, as well. Any items that they cannot use will be sold to raise funds for operations.
Home Depot
Most locations recycle rechargeable batteries, light bulbs, and some electronics.
Hope’s Closet
They take donations of gently used or new baby clothes, furniture, and other items to be used with foster children who often travel with items that fit in a suitcase. Check to see what items they are currently taking before dropping off.
Kroger
They don’t just recycle their plastic bags, but many of their own brand’s packaging.
Lowe’s
Lowe’s stores offer a recycling center (usually near the entrance) that accepts plastic bags, CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and cellphones. Lowe’s also accepts plastic planter pots and cases in the garden center for recycling. Simply bring your items in, follow the instructions at the recycling center, or garden center, and Lowe’s will take care of the rest.
Louisville Self-Serve Recycling Centers
There are several self-service locations around the area, but pay attention if they are single stream or not to see if you need to sort items. There is also information about hazardous materials and large/bulky item dropoffs.
Police Stations
Call your local police station as many take stuffed animals to give to children involved in their calls to help calm them.
Project Prom
There are multiple locations to drop off your gently used prom/evening gowns. They are given to those Junior or Senior girls who are otherwise unable to afford formal attire for prom.
Target Car Seat Trade In
If you did not know, car seats have expiration dates and cannot be reused after being in an accident. Do not throw them away though because Target offers a 20% off coupon for each car seat you trade in for a new one. You do not have to purchase that day.
Water Step
I learned about this organization when I first saw a donation box at my local Mortenson location. Our family goes through many shoes and we donate all of them to WaterStep, which help provide safe water to communities worldwide.
